An American Tail (1986) is the story of the Mousekewitz family, Jewish mice from Russia who leave their village to pursue the American dream in New York City. On the boat to America, Fievel (voiced by Phillip Glasser) is separated from the rest of his family and is swept up in the corruption of of his new home. In his quest to reunite with his family he gets caught up with kitty cat conman, works in a sweatshop, and becomes friends with other immigrant mice. While the film is directed at children, the issues that arise reflect the burdens that immigrants in the nineteenth century really faced, from corrupt party bosses offering protection for a price to the struggle to keep their families together.
